Numen reads this Current

Every public company is now talking about AI. The interesting question is which ones are spending. The AI Capex Race Current tracks the divergence between talking and committing.

Three things matter. First, how widely is AI being discussed — what fraction of the cohort is dedicating a meaningful portion of earnings calls to artificial intelligence. Second, how is capex moving — companies that are raising capex guidance while citing AI infrastructure are the real participants; companies talking about AI while holding capex flat are spectators. Third, leader confidence — when management commits real capital AND speaks with conviction, the commitment is structural.

The Current does not say the capex will earn its return. The 1999 telecom build-out also had all three reads peaking together. Capex can be real and still mistimed. But the read on whether the commitment is structural — versus rhetorical, performative, or hedged — comes from this Current.

When the AI Capex Race is in CONSENSUS or SATURATED maturity bands, the build-out is the dominant capital allocation story in public markets. When it is in EMERGING or ADOPTING, early movers still have edge. The transition between bands is what stewards watch.

Methodology

Components:

  • palanor_discourse_ai_intensity — cross-cohort average AI mentions per call
  • palanor_discourse_capex_guidance_net — net capex guidance direction
  • palanor_discourse_confidence — leader confidence

Three reads:

  • Momentum: 30-day slope on the AI Capex Race composite
  • Belief: fraction of cohort companies with both raised capex guidance AND AI mention count above cohort median
  • Maturity: ratio of cohort companies that mentioned AI on the most recent call (saturation read)

Refresh cadence: daily. Sources: SEC EDGAR + Anthropic Claude.
