Numen reads this Current

What public-company management says on earnings calls is the most carefully drafted text in capitalism. Lawyers read it. Boards read it. Shareholders read it. The CFO says what the CFO meant to say.

But what management actually believes is much harder to disguise. The Hesitation Current is the divergence between what management is saying (sentiment) and how firmly they are saying it (confidence). When sentiment stays neutral or positive but confidence drops — when the language gets softer, the qualifications proliferate, the guidance ranges widen — the boardroom has lost conviction even though the press release has not.

This is the signal that turns before payrolls turn. Before margin compression shows up in 10-K filings, it shows up in the language management uses to describe the next quarter.

The Hesitation reads three things: how broadly across the cohort the confidence gap has opened, how fast it is widening, and how mature the trend is. A short, narrow Hesitation can be quarterly noise. A long, broad Hesitation is what precedes a re-rating.

31.7

/ 100 · as of 2026-06-12

What worried sounds like. A composite of layoff + recession mention frequency, confidence dispersion, and the inverse of buyback mention frequency — measuring how defensive the boardroom is, in one number 0–100.

Methodology

Components:

  • palanor_discourse_confidence — cross-cohort average confidence score (trailing 90d)
  • palanor_discourse_sentiment — cross-cohort average sentiment score (trailing 90d)
  • Hesitation gap = sentiment - confidence (higher = more hedging behind the rhetoric)

Three reads:

  • Momentum: 30-day slope on the Hesitation gap
  • Belief: fraction of cohort companies with confidence_score < sentiment_score
  • Maturity: how many consecutive quarters the gap has been widening

Refresh cadence: daily after the discourse-aggregate cron fires.
