Anthropic pulls Claude 3.7 after US export-control order
The company suspended its latest models to comply with new restrictions on foreign-national access, citing a jailbreak finding it calls too narrow to justify the recall.

Anthropic took its Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Haiku models offline this week after the Trump administration invoked national-security export controls. The directive, confirmed by the Financial Times and AP, limits foreign-national access to the company's most capable releases. Anthropic has not published the specific jailbreak or capability threshold that triggered the order, but the company made its objection public: it believes a narrow exploit does not warrant pulling a model deployed to hundreds of millions of users.
The timing matters. Anthropic shipped 3.7 Sonnet in late March with updated reasoning and extended context. Pricing held at prior levels—$3 per million input tokens, $15 output—but the model's effective cost per useful token dropped as developers reported fewer retries on complex tasks. That margin improvement now sits frozen while the company negotiates access rules with Commerce and Defense officials.
TechCrunch reports the safety disclosure may have backfired. Anthropic has positioned itself as the transparency-forward provider, publishing model cards and capability evaluations ahead of launch. If that practice now increases regulatory surface area faster than it builds trust, the incentive structure shifts. Competitors who ship quietly, patch privately, and disclose selectively face less intervention risk. The question is whether this becomes a one-time overcorrection or a template for future model releases above a certain capability threshold.
India's AI community is reading the suspension as confirmation that frontier access is a concession, not a given. TechCrunch notes local developers asking whether domestic model development should accelerate to reduce reliance on US-controlled providers. The answer depends on the capex available and the inference-cost curve. If open weights from Llama, Qwen, or Mistral cross the capability and cost thresholds Claude occupies within six months, the export control becomes a temporary speed bump. If the gap persists, it becomes a structural dependency.
