Anthropic searches for capacity as Oracle takes the capex hit

The model provider is shopping for data center leases and more Google backing. Meanwhile, Oracle's debt-funded AI buildout spooked equity holders.

Anthropic is pursuing data center leases and seeking additional financial backing from Google, according to The Information. The move signals a familiar infrastructure bottleneck: the model provider has demand it cannot serve on existing cloud capacity. TCS announced a dedicated business unit to deploy Anthropic's models to enterprise customers, which accelerates distribution but does not solve the underlying rack constraint.

The Google financing angle matters. Anthropic already took $2 billion from Google in staged commitments tied to GCP usage. If the company is back for more, either inference volume exceeded internal projections or the effective cost per served token remains higher than the pricing structure can sustain. The TCS partnership offloads some integration work but adds no new compute.

Oracle's equity sell-off offers the counterpoint. Shares dropped after the company laid out AI capex plans funded partly by debt. Investors priced the spend as dilutive before the revenue materializes. Oracle is building; Anthropic is leasing. Both paths carry financing risk, but the lease route defers the balance-sheet load and keeps the model layer asset-light.

KKR, the Kuwait Investment Authority, and power provider Vistra launched Helix, a new AI infrastructure firm. The structure is notable: a sovereign fund, a private equity sponsor, and an energy operator bundling capital and kilowatts. That configuration reflects the real constraint in 2025 — not chips, but power delivery at the substation level and the financing to wait three years for tenants to break even on the lease.

Anthropic's capacity search and Oracle's capex hit land in the same week because they describe opposite sides of the same trade. The hyperscaler builds and absorbs the depreciation risk. The model provider rents and absorbs the margin compression when the lease rate does not drop as fast as inference cost must. Right now, equity markets are punishing the builder. The model layer has not yet reported the bill for renting at scale.

Anthropic is reportedly moving toward its first direct data center leases with more than a dozen LOIs signed with U.S. developers. $GOOGL may financially guarantee part of those lease obligations helping Anthropic move closer to the $META and OpenAI infrastructure playbook.

@elonmusk You might want to check out what Anthropic is doing with your data center. It could be trying to find a way to sabotage Grok.
