Data Center Utility Profits Signal Power Infrastructure Keeps Pace

Dominion's earnings beat shows power grid holding up as hyperscalers expand AI compute capacity, but bottlenecks loom.

Dominion Energy posted quarterly results that topped analyst estimates, driven by data center power demand. The Virginia-based utility serves as a primary power provider to Northern Virginia's data center cluster, which houses roughly 30% of US hyperscaler compute capacity. Revenue growth accelerated 7.3% year-over-year, with data center customers accounting for the majority of the upside.

The numbers matter because power infrastructure has been the assumed constraint on AI buildout. Dominion's performance suggests the grid is keeping pace with current demand curves. The utility added 1.2 gigawatts of new data center load in Q3, bringing total data center capacity to 6.8 gigawatts under contract. That's enough to power approximately 850,000 H100 GPUs at full tilt.

But the math gets tighter from here. Dominion forecasts 1.5-1.7 gigawatts of additional data center load annually through 2026. Transmission upgrades and substation construction lead times run 24-36 months. The utility is spending $4.2 billion on grid modernization through 2027, yet power procurement costs rose 12% this quarter.

The constraint isn't generation capacity—it's distribution. Dominion's service territory has the juice, but getting it to hyperscaler campuses requires new transmission lines and substations. Those projects face permitting delays that could compress the effective deployment timeline for new AI clusters.
