Defense AI pilots stall without talent pipelines

The Pentagon's AI ambitions keep running into the same wall: not enough people who can actually build the things. The work changed in March when the job postings went up. The people arrived in September, if they arrived at all.

Meanwhile, defense executives are surprisingly cheerful about the money. Breaking Defense notes that RTX's CEO sees bipartisan support for increased munitions spending, which means hiring across the supply chain. When the senior engineers stopped relocating to defense hubs, the contractors started paying premiums to bring them back. The wage compression shows up first in Huntsville and Colorado Springs, not the coasts.

The talent geography is shifting. Government AI programs need people who understand both the technology and the procurement process—a rare combination that commands premium pay. LinkedIn job postings for defense AI roles have drifted from "must have clearance" to "clearance preferred, salary negotiable" over the past six months. The language softened when the talent pool hardened.

What separates the winners from the stalled pilots isn't better algorithms. It's better recruiting. The agencies that partnered with defense contractors on talent pipelines are the ones seeing their AI programs move from pilot to production. The others are still waiting for resumes that never come.
