Florida pension commits deeper to PE while Taiwan risk reprices
Two institutional stories this week: one state board leaning into illiquidity, one geopolitical tail scenario moving from edge case to base case.

Florida's State Board of Administration is deepening its private equity program, according to new data published by Private Equity International. The six-chart package shows allocation growth, manager concentration, and return profiles across the SBA's illiquid book. The state is adding commitment capacity even as public pension peers debate whether the illiquidity premium still exists in a zero-rate world that ended two years ago.
Meanwhile, WealthManagement flagged a sobering scenario analysis: a US-China conflict over Taiwan would constitute an extinction-level event for global capital markets. Not a drawdown. Not a correction. Extinction. The framing matters because it moves Taiwan from the geopolitical risk register—where allocators traditionally assign low probability and defer hedging—to the existential bucket, where there is no hedge and no post-conflict portfolio to rebalance into.
The juxtaposition is the read. One large US state pension is locking up more capital in seven-to-ten-year vehicles while the tail risk that would vaporize those vehicles is being re-rated from remote to structural. Private Equity International did not discuss Taiwan. WealthManagement did not discuss Florida. But the two stories share a balance sheet.
Institutions have spent the last decade optimizing for illiquidity premia, co-investment economics, and IRR storytelling. They have not optimized for a scenario in which the global clearing system stops clearing. Florida's SBA is executing the playbook that worked from 2010 to 2021. The question is whether that playbook assumes a world that no longer exists.
This is not an argument against private equity. It is an observation that the return assumptions embedded in today's commitments may not be pricing the treaty risk embedded in today's Taiwan Strait. The chart package from Private Equity International shows where Florida is going. The scenario analysis from WealthManagement shows what happens if the road ends.
