US strikes Iranian targets after drone hits cargo ship in Hormuz
The first American military action against Iran since last week's memorandum of understanding followed Thursday's drone attacks on commercial vessels transiting the strait.

US Central Command confirmed Friday it conducted strikes against Iranian missile, drone, and radar installations around the Strait of Hormuz. The action came one day after Iran launched drones at multiple commercial ships passing through the waterway, including a strike on the Singapore-flagged cargo vessel Ever Lovely as it exited the strait along the Omani coast.
The timing marks a sharp break. These are the first US strikes on Iranian targets since the signing of a memorandum of understanding last week that was described as ending hostilities. The document appears not to have survived first contact with Iranian operational behavior.
The Strait of Hormuz remains the world's most important oil chokepoint, handling roughly a fifth of global petroleum liquids trade. Any sustained disruption to commercial shipping through the strait translates directly into energy price volatility and elevated insurance premiums for tanker operators. Thursday's drone strikes targeted vessels in transit, a higher-risk profile than the harassment and seizure attempts that have characterized Iranian activity in recent years.
The White House has attributed the drone strike to Iran. Central Command's statement did not detail the scale of Friday's retaliatory strikes or specify which Iranian facilities were hit, only that missile, drone, and radar sites were targeted. The lack of detail suggests an effort to calibrate the response—sufficient to reestablish deterrence but contained enough to avoid triggering a broader escalation cycle that would require sustained American commitment in the Gulf.
