Dashed: the projection from the latest reading. Shaded: the range about two in three outcomes land in. A projection, not a promise.
The American Dream Ledger is a Palanor calculation from public data: Census/HUD house prices, Freddie Mac mortgage rates, BLS Consumer Expenditure Survey and CPI, USDA, NCES, CMS and SSA. Lifetime at today’s prices, nothing projected or discounted. Weddings are left out: no public source measures them. Income is the Census median for each year, before tax.
Whether the American Dream is getting harder to afford: the American Dream Ledger’s lifetime cost of a home, cars, two children, college, health care, retirement, vacations and pets, against what the median household earns over a working life. When the cost line pulls away from the income line, the same life takes a larger share of a lifetime’s pay.
