Australia’s Electricity: Renewables Against Fossil Fuels
Share of electricity generation, monthly, %: all renewable sources and all fossil fuels
Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where the data set a record or moved most.
Renewables · Continuation · the recent trend, flattening · 30 days
Fossil fuels · Continuation · the recent trend, flattening · 30 days
Dashed: the projection from the latest reading. Shaded: the range about two in three outcomes land in. A projection, not a promise.
Ember monthly electricity data (CC BY 4.0). Renewables are hydro, wind, solar and bioenergy; fossil fuels are coal, gas and other fossil fuels. Australia has no nuclear power, so the two add up to the whole. Shares are seasonal: rooftop and utility solar peak in the southern summer.
Australia’s grid, long one of the most coal-heavy in the developed world, now gets about half its electricity from renewables in some months, led by rooftop and utility-scale solar and wind.
