How Economies Change as Countries Grow Richer

World Bank, World Development Indicators (CC BY 4.0): gross value added by sector as a share of GDP. The U.S. shares are Palanor’s calculation from BEA GDP by Industry, because the World Bank’s U.S. series stops in 2021. Bars are drawn side by side, not stacked: the World Bank aggregates each share over the countries that report it, so a group’s three shares need not add up, and GDP also counts taxes on products less subsidies. The World Bank has published no high-income services share since 2021, so that bar is not drawn.
Farming is about a quarter of output in low-income countries and barely more than one percent in rich ones, where services carry most of the economy. The path from one to the other is the story of development.
