NO2 Pollution Over Industrial Hotspots vs a Year Earlier
Tropospheric NO2 over each place's cities, industry and power plants, change from the same month a year earlier, %
Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where a new leader takes first place.
Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data, processed by KNMI (TEMIS). Monthly mean tropospheric NO2 from TROPOMI on Sentinel-5P, averaged by Palanor over Natural Earth boundaries. NO2 is far higher in winter than in summer. Hotspots: the tenth of each place's area with the highest NO2 in 2019, its cities, industry and power plants.
A satellite read on fuel burning in the big economies. NO2 comes mostly from power plants, factories and traffic and lasts only hours, so less of it than a year earlier usually means less activity, cleaner equipment or windier weather. Comparing the same month removes the seasons.
