U.S. Census Bureau, Business Dynamics Statistics. Employer establishments (single locations with paid employees); each year runs March to March. A chain opening a store is a birth. Not comparable with Canada's monthly openings and closures, which count businesses and include temporary closures.
Every U.S. workplace with employees that opened or closed in each year since 1978. Deaths overtook births in the Great Recession; the gap between the lines is the change in the number of establishments.
