What Is Waiting to Connect to the U.S. Grid
Capacity of generation and storage projects active in interconnection queues at year end, by type, gigawatts
Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where the data set a record or moved most.
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and GridTracker, Queued Up (CC BY 4.0). Capacity of generation and storage projects still active in interconnection queues at year end. Most queued capacity is never built. Storage paired with solar or wind is LBNL's estimate and is included from 2020.
Every power plant must wait in a queue for grid studies before it can connect. The queue shows what developers want to build: years of solar and batteries, and now a return of gas as data centers look for power that runs on demand.
