Where Power Projects Are Waiting to Connect
Capacity of generation and storage projects active in interconnection queues at year end, by grid operator, gigawatts
Latest reading for each area, to 2025 · Bins hold about equal counts
Plays the chart through its history, period by period.
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and GridTracker, Queued Up (CC BY 4.0). Capacity of generation and storage projects still active in interconnection queues at year end. Most queued capacity is never built. Each state takes the colour of the grid operator that covers most of it; the Southeast and the West outside California are utilities that sit outside an ISO.
Proposed power plants and batteries in each grid operator’s queue. The largest queues are where developers expect demand and where land and sun are cheap; how fast each operator clears its queue decides how much of it gets built.
