Dashed: the projection from the latest reading. Shaded: the range about two in three outcomes land in. A projection, not a promise.

CDC National Center for Health Statistics, final birth-certificate data via CDC WONDER. Births in the United States to residents and non-residents, by the mother’s age at the birth. First births are births of live-birth order 1; the 1995-2002 database records no birth order, so the line starts later than the births series.

The average age at which U.S. mothers have their first child. It moves slowly, by a fraction of a year at a time, so the long run is what the chart shows.

Sources

U.S. Mean Age of Mother at First Birth. Source: CDC WONDER Natality databases (wonder.cdc.gov): 1995-2002, 2003-2006 and 2007 to the latest final year, from the National Vital Statistics System birth certificates compiled by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). Read through the WONDER API, national figures only. Public domain; use does not imply CDC endorsement. WONDER's data-use restrictions apply: health statistical reporting and analysis only, and no count of 9 or fewer is published. Palanor checks monthly; NCHS adds a final year once a year.

Charts are drawn from Palanor's signal library and recomputed from source data on every view. Transformations (changes, indexing, year-on-year rates) are Palanor's.
