What U.S. Private Foundations Fund
Share of classified foundation grant dollars by theme, latest tax year, %
Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where a new leader takes first place.
Palanor calculation from IRS Form 990-PF e-file returns (public domain), one return per foundation per tax year. A tax year is published once the IRS has posted the two following years of returns. Tax year 2021 is left out: a large share of its returns is missing from the IRS's public e-file release. Shares of the grant dollars Palanor could place in a theme: by the grant's stated purpose, else the recipient's IRS activity code, else its name. Rules were set before any total was computed; the classified share is its own series.
Where foundation money goes, read from the grants themselves: universities and schools, hospitals and research, food and housing, the arts, aid abroad and more.
