Every investment adviser registered with the SEC files Form ADV, and so do exempt reporting advisers: venture capital managers and small private fund managers that are exempt from registration but still report. Palanor loads three things the SEC publishes from those filings.
What Palanor loads
- The monthly adviser lists. Every adviser on the SEC's monthly lists since 2006 (exempt reporting advisers since 2012), one row per adviser with its latest answers: main office, assets under management, clients, private funds by type and their gross assets, and its exemption. Palanor adds the month each adviser first appeared and the date it registered or first reported, refreshed monthly.
- Private funds from Schedule D. Each private fund an adviser describes in Form ADV Schedule D: type, gross asset value, beneficial owners, minimum investment, auditors and the fund's Form D file number. These come from the SEC's FOIA Form ADV files through 2024, then from the monthly Form ADV files on the SEC's adviser disclosure site.
- The SEC's statistics. The SEC's yearly Investment Adviser Statistics and quarterly Private Fund Statistics (from Form PF), as published.
What Palanor adds
- New advisers. Counts of firms newly registered, new exempt reporting advisers and new venture capital fund advisers, by month, quarter and year.
- A typing-error guard. A few advisers mistype their assets by a factor of a thousand. A sudden jump of that kind is held out of the totals, and fund values that are clearly typing errors are flagged.
- First-time fund managers. Palanor matches the Form D file numbers in Schedule D to the Form D notices, so it can date each adviser's first fund and count first-time managers each year.
- Big Four audit share. The share of private funds, and of their assets, audited by PwC, Deloitte, EY or KPMG.

Signals
The capital.form_adv signals count advisers and their assets each month, nationally and by state. The capital.form_adv_funds signals carry the Schedule D readings: Big Four audit shares, median fund sizes and first-time managers. The capital.form_pf and capital.sec_ia_stats signals are the SEC's own statistics. Add them to a watchlist or scenario like any other signal.
Limits
Form ADV answers are self-reported and most advisers update them once a year, so a month's totals mix figures from different dates. State-registered advisers are not on the SEC's lists. Schedule D fiscal years are complete through 2025. A year is added once advisers have filed its annual amendments, which are due within 90 days of the fiscal year end. Form PF covers only larger advisers.
