Trademarks and federal contract opportunities

What companies are getting ready to sell (U.S. trademark applications) and what the federal government is getting ready to buy (SAM.gov solicitations), by month, with the companies behind them on entity pages.

Updated 2026-10-20

Two early reads on the economy: trademark applications show the products and brands companies are preparing to launch, and federal solicitations show the contracts agencies are about to award. Both are counted by month from the government's own records.

Trademark applications (USPTO)

From the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's daily trademark files, one count per application, by the month it was filed:

  • Applications filed (trademarks.us.applications) and the classes they name (trademarks.us.classes_filed). One application can cover several of the 45 Nice classes.
  • By class (trademarks.us.class.09, .42, .35, …): software and electronics, technology services, retail, clothing, beverages, financial services and ten more.
  • Intent to use (trademarks.us.itu_share): the share filed before the product is on sale. A rising share means more brands in the pipeline.
  • AI (trademarks.us.ai_marks, trademarks.us.ai_goods and their shares): applications whose mark names AI, and those whose goods and services name artificial intelligence. The rules are fixed in advance and published in each signal's methodology.
  • Applicants in China (trademarks.us.china_share).

History runs from 2000. A month publishes a week after it ends.

Federal contract opportunities (SAM.gov)

From SAM.gov's public Contract Opportunities extract, by the month each notice was posted, from January 2020:

  • Solicitations posted (procurement.sam.solicitations.posted), by department (.dod, .va, .dhs, …) and by industry (.naics_54 for professional and technical services, and five more).
  • The early pipeline (procurement.sam.presolicitations.posted): presolicitation and sources-sought notices, which come before a solicitation.
  • Open at month end (procurement.sam.solicitations.open): solicitations posted and not yet past their response deadline.
  • AI solicitations (procurement.sam.solicitations.ai and .ai_share), small-business set-asides (procurement.sam.solicitations.set_aside_share) and award notices (procurement.sam.award_notices.posted).
  • From solicitation to award (procurement.pipeline_to_award_ratio): new federal purchase orders and contracts of $25,000 or more from USAspending (usaspending.contracts.new_awards_25k) over 12 months, per solicitation posted in the 12 months ending a quarter earlier.

Solicitations rarely carry a dollar value, so these series count notices, not dollars.

On entity pages and in the Screener

An entity page lists the trademark applications filed in the company's exact name, with its yearly count, its intent-to-use share and links to each application in TSDR, and the SAM.gov award notices that name it. In the Screener, companies can be filtered by trademark filings and AI trademark filings in the last 12 months, and by SAM.gov award notices.

A company is matched only when the applicant or awardee name matches it exactly and no other company in the graph has that name, or, for award notices, by its UEI. Filings by subsidiaries under other names are not counted.

What it does not say

A trademark application is not a launch: many marks are never used. The AI rules read words, so a brand that is AI-powered but never says so is not counted, and a few foreign words spelled "AI" are. Not every federal purchase is posted on SAM.gov (small purchases and orders under existing contracts are not), and posted award amounts are as the agency typed them.
