Iraq's use of new oil shipping routes coincides with recovering Gulf crude flows and potential erosion of Iran's leverage over the strategic strait.

What happened

Iraq transported 2 million barrels of crude through the Strait of Hormuz. 12 The shipments moved through the strait rather than delivering at the port of Basra. 1 At least 16.5 million barrels per day of crude left the Persian Gulf region between September 1 and 28. 3 Gulf crude flow has recovered to near-prewar levels. 3

Why it matters

Much of the oil is reaching markets through routes and shipping arrangements that did not exist before the war. 3 The new shipping arrangements raise questions about whether Iran is losing its leverage over the Strait of Hormuz. 3
