Supreme Court draws the line at Fed and tariffs, not the bureaucracy
The Court handed Trump unprecedented control over agencies—but protected the two institutions markets care about most.

The Supreme Court this term gave President Trump powers over the federal government that no modern president has held, according to Axios. But in a pair of rulings that mattered most to markets, the Court blocked his administration on the Fed and tariffs. The distinction is sharp: Trump can reshape regulatory agencies election by election, but he cannot politicize monetary policy or invoke emergency tariff powers without constraint.
For businesses, the message is clear. Regulatory policy will be less stable and more political with every administration. The Court's decisions signal that the bureaucracy is no longer insulated from presidential preference. But the rulings preserve hard limits around the two institutions investors feared most: the Federal Reserve and the tariff lever.
Between the lines, the Court drew a boundary not around executive power in general, but around the specific tools that can move markets overnight. Fed independence and tariff restraint were treated differently than agency rulemaking—because their disruption carries systemic risk.
