Adults Using ChatGPT · U.S. (Pew)

Latest

44%

Methodology

## What this measures

The share of U.S. adults who use ChatGPT, from Pew Research Center surveys: 18% in July 2023, 23% in March 2024, 34% in March 2025 and 44% in February 2026.

## Why it matters

Comparing how fast households and people took up earlier technologies gives a yardstick for how fast AI is being taken up. Each series counts something a little different (a household owning a computer, an adult using the internet, owning a smartphone, using a chatbot), so compare speeds and shapes, not exact levels. ChatGPT is the most widely used AI chatbot in the U.S., so it is the longest consistent read Pew has on personal AI use.

## How to read it

Higher means more adults use ChatGPT. The share more than doubled in under three years. In February 2026 Pew also found 49% of adults use some AI chatbot (ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or another), so ChatGPT alone understates AI use.

## What it does not say

The question changed in 2026. From 2023 to 2025 Pew asked "Have you ever used ChatGPT?" of people who had heard of it (shown here as a share of all adults); in 2026 it asked whether people use it, alongside other chatbots. Treat the 2025–2026 step as approximate. It counts use, not payment, and says nothing about how often or for what.
