World Vegetable Oil Production · Palm Oil · million tonnes (FAOSTAT)
Latest
87.93million tonnes
Methodology
## What this measures
World production of palm oil and palm kernel oil, both pressed from the fruit of the oil palm, in million tonnes, each year from 1961. Cottonseed and maize oil are left out: they are by-products of crops grown for fibre and grain, and counting that land would swamp the comparison. Each value is dated December 31.
## Why it matters
Vegetable oil is a staple food, a biofuel feedstock and an industrial input; palm and soybean oil set prices across the market. Output by crop shows how supply has shifted, above all the rise of palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia.
## How to read it
Higher is more oil. Read the trend over several years; weather and El Niño move single years. Its share of the five groups is agriculture.fao.vegoil_production_share.palm; the land it comes from is agriculture.fao.oilcrop_area_mha.palm.
## What it does not say
FAOSTAT world totals sum national reports, many of them FAO estimates; recent years are revised. Oil output lags the area figures by about a year. Oils pressed from imported seed count where they are pressed.
