World Vegetable Oil Production · Sunflower Oil · million tonnes (FAOSTAT)
Latest
22.66million tonnes
Methodology
## What this measures
World production of sunflower-seed oil, crude, in million tonnes, each year from 1961. Cottonseed and maize oil are left out: they are by-products of crops grown for fibre and grain, and counting that land would swamp the comparison. Each value is dated December 31.
## Why it matters
Vegetable oil is a staple food, a biofuel feedstock and an industrial input; palm and soybean oil set prices across the market. Output by crop shows how supply has shifted, above all the rise of palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia.
## How to read it
Higher is more oil. Read the trend over several years; weather and El Niño move single years. Its share of the five groups is agriculture.fao.vegoil_production_share.sunflower; the land it comes from is agriculture.fao.oilcrop_area_mha.sunflower.
## What it does not say
FAOSTAT world totals sum national reports, many of them FAO estimates; recent years are revised. Oil output lags the area figures by about a year. Oils pressed from imported seed count where they are pressed.
