Methodology
## What this measures
United States's AI patent applications under the PCT as a percentage of the world total in the same priority year: ai.patents.pct.usa ÷ ai.patents.pct.world × 100. Applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), counted by priority year (the year of first filing) and by the country where the inventors live. Counts are fractional: an application with inventors in two countries counts half to each, so no application is counted twice across countries. Which applications count as AI follows the OECD's own definition, described in the OECD.AI technical paper.
## Why it matters
The share shows where AI invention is moving between countries, independent of how fast the whole field grows.
## How to read it
Higher means a larger slice of the world's AI patent filings. Compare the U.S. and China lines in the same year; the rest of the world makes up the remainder.
## What it does not say
It counts international filings, not domestic ones or granted patents, and says nothing about their quality. The newest years are revised as applications are published.
