Methodology
## What this measures
Two baskets of English Google searches in Australia, compared in one request so they share a scale. The worried basket: AI dangers, AI risk, stop AI, AI taking jobs. The enthusiastic basket: AI tools, learn AI, best AI, how to use AI. The value is the worried basket's share of the two combined, in percent.
## Why it matters
Surveys of AI attitudes come once a year. Searches move every week, so this shows between surveys whether worry is gaining on curiosity. It is one of the inputs to the AI Doomers vs. Accelerationists Current.
## How to read it
Higher means a larger part of AI-related searching is about danger and job loss rather than tools and learning. Read it as a trend within one country. Levels are comparable only between countries searching in the same language, because wording changes volume.
## What it does not say
It is not a poll: searching for AI dangers is not the same as believing AI is dangerous, and news events drive spikes. Weeks where the two baskets together are under 5 on Google's scale are left out, which drops most of 2021 and 2022, when neither was searched much. Latin America is not covered: Spanish and Portuguese danger wording has too little volume, and job wording also catches people looking for AI jobs.
