Methodology

## What this measures

New papers submitted to arXiv in the month and listed in Computation and Language (cs.CL), as the main category or as a cross-list, dated by first-version submission. Complete months only.

## Why it matters

arXiv is where most AI research appears first, so paper counts are a timely read on research activity, ahead of products, patents and spending.

## How to read it

Read a month against the same month a year earlier: conference deadlines and holidays move single months. The latest complete month is the newest reading; the month in progress is never stored.

## What it does not say

Counts papers, not their quality or influence. Conference deadlines make some months jump; compare a month with the same month a year earlier. Recent months can rise a little as late cross-lists are added.

## Source

arXiv API counts of papers by category and first-version submission date, complete months only; arXiv monthly submission statistics. Metadata CC0 1.0. Thank you to arXiv for use of its open access interoperability. Source: arXiv.
