U.S. Bank Deposits, Change From a Year Earlier (All Banks)

Latest

5.36%

Methodology

## What this measures

The percent change in total deposits over the past year for the banks that were every bank that filed a Call Report for the quarter a year earlier: their deposits then, against the deposits of the same banks now (domestic plus foreign offices).

## Why it matters

Deposits are banks’ cheapest funding. Outflows force banks to borrow at higher cost or sell securities at a loss, as in 2023 when deposits left mid-size banks for the largest banks and money market funds.

## How to read it

Higher means deposits grew. Deposits jumped about 20% in 2020 on pandemic savings and stimulus and fell in 2023. Compare the size bands to see where money moved.

## What it does not say

It does not separate insured from uninsured deposits or price from volume. A bank that fails or merges out of the group counts as lost deposits for its band, even when another bank takes them on. Size bands use each bank’s total assets in the quarter, in nominal dollars, so banks move between bands as they grow and the bands hold more banks over time than they would in constant dollars. Figures are for individual bank charters, not holding companies.

## How it's built

For the banks in the band a year earlier: the sum of their deposits now (RCON2200 + RCFN2200, banks that still file) divided by the sum of all their deposits then, minus one. Following the same banks keeps new charters (and the savings institutions that began filing Call Reports in 2012) from counting as growth, and mergers inside the group net out. History from the first quarter of 2009.

## Source

Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council, Central Data Repository, Call Reports bulk data ("Call Reports -- Single Period", cdr.ffiec.gov), every insured U.S. commercial bank and savings institution that files a Call Report; U.S. government work. Refreshed by /api/cron/bank-call-reports-sync, which checks weekly for a new quarter (banks file 30 days after quarter end; the full set is usually complete about 45 days after).
