U.S. Banks Noncurrent Loan Rate ($10B-$100B Assets)

Methodology
## What this measures
Loans and leases 90 days or more past due and still accruing plus loans on nonaccrual, as a percent of total loans and leases, summed over banks with total assets of $10 billion to under $100 billion.
## Why it matters
Noncurrent loans are where credit losses come from. The rate rises before charge-offs and before banks pull back on lending, so it is a direct read of borrower stress on bank balance sheets.
## How to read it
Higher means more loans have stopped paying. It is a dollar-weighted rate: the largest banks move the all-bank figure most. Compare across size bands to see where stress sits.
## What it does not say
It does not include loans already charged off, and banks differ in how quickly they place loans on nonaccrual. Loans modified for borrowers in difficulty can be current while still risky. Size bands use each bank’s total assets in the quarter, in nominal dollars, so banks move between bands as they grow and the bands hold more banks over time than they would in constant dollars. Figures are for individual bank charters, not holding companies.
## How it's built
Sum over banks of RC-N total past due 90 days or more and still accruing (1407) plus total nonaccrual (1403), divided by the sum of total loans and leases (2122), consolidated where the bank reports foreign offices. The total rows were added to the Call Report in 2017, so the series starts in the first quarter of 2017. History from 2017.
