Brazil Consumer Price Inflation

Latest

4.22% y/y

Methodology

## What this measures

The 12-month change in Brazil's consumer price index, from the BIS long series on consumer prices (built from national sources).

## Why it matters

It is the inflation rate the central bank targets and the main driver of its policy rate.

## How to read it

It was 4.2% in August 2026, down from 5.1% a year earlier. The series starts in 1981 and includes the hyperinflation of 1989–94 (it peaked near 6,800% in April 1990), so read it from the mid-1990s.

## What it does not say

It is the headline rate; it does not separate food and energy from core inflation.

## Source

Bank for International Settlements, Consumer prices (long series), year-on-year change, series `WS_LONG_CPI/M.BR.771` (stats.bis.org). Palanor reads the full series every day. Source: BIS. Used under the BIS terms for statistics: reuse is unrestricted with the BIS cited as the source, and the statistics carry no additional charge in Palanor.
