Methodology
## What this measures
The 12-month change in South Africa's consumer price index, from the BIS long series on consumer prices (built from national sources).
## Why it matters
It is the inflation rate the central bank targets and the main driver of its policy rate.
## How to read it
It was 4.3% in July 2026, up from 3.5% a year earlier. The series runs back to 1923.
## What it does not say
It is the headline rate; it does not separate food and energy from core inflation.
