Methodology
## What this measures
A Consumer Price Index subindex tracking the price level of college tuition and fees. It is the headline education-cost series featured in analyses of cost-disease sectors.
## Why it matters
College costs shape talent-acquisition budgets, household purchasing power and the affordability of workforce development. Organizations that employ knowledge workers or sponsor education benefits see their cost structures move with this series. Sustained divergence from broader inflation signals structural shifts in the market for skilled labor.
## How to read it
The index rises when tuition and fees grow more expensive. Compare its rate of change to overall CPI or wage growth to assess whether higher education is outpacing income gains or general inflation. A rising spread indicates cost disease, faster price growth in service-heavy, productivity-resistant sectors.
## What it does not say
The index does not capture room, board, textbooks or other student expenses. It does not distinguish between public and private institutions or explain why costs rise.
