U.S. Real Average Hourly Earnings
Latest
11.241982–84 USD per hour
Methodology
## What this measures
Average hourly earnings of all private employees, adjusted for consumer prices (CPI-W) and expressed in 1982–84 dollars.
## Why it matters
It is the official BLS measure of whether pay is keeping up with prices.
## How to read it
Read the 12-month change: positive means pay is outpacing inflation.
## What it does not say
It lags payrolls by a month because it waits for CPI, and it is an average, so job-mix shifts move it.
