Brazil Primary Balance (12-Month, % of GDP)
Latest
-0.62% of GDP
Methodology
## What this measures
The public sector's balance before interest payments over the past 12 months, as a percent of GDP. The central bank publishes it as a borrowing requirement (positive = deficit); Palanor flips the sign so positive is a surplus.
## Why it matters
The primary balance is what the government controls; it decides whether debt can stabilise.
## How to read it
It was −0.6% (a deficit) in the 12 months to August 2026.
## What it does not say
It excludes interest, which in Brazil is several times larger than the primary balance.
