Canada Business Closures Rate (Monthly)
Latest
4.98% of active businesses
Methodology
## What this measures
Business closures each month as a percentage of the month's active businesses with employees (canada.business.closings ÷ canada.business.active × 100), seasonally adjusted, since January 2015.
## Why it matters
A rate removes the growth in the number of businesses, so months years apart compare directly.
## How to read it
It is a monthly rate: twelve months of it are roughly the annual rate, but businesses that open and close more than once in a year count each time.
## What it does not say
These are experimental estimates: they are revised, and a closing can be temporary. Businesses with no employees (the self-employed) are not counted. The counts are not comparable with U.S. establishment births and deaths (annual, per location, permanent only). U.S. establishment birth and death rates (business.us.bds.*) are annual and per location, so they are not on the same footing.
