Canada Consumer Price Index
Latest
170index (2002=100)
Methodology
## What this measures
The price of a fixed basket of goods and services bought by Canadian households, as an index with 2002 = 100.
## Why it matters
It is the inflation measure the Bank of Canada targets at 2% and the one wages, pensions and benefits are indexed to.
## How to read it
Read the 12-month change (canada.cpi.yoy), not the level. Monthly moves include seasonal patterns because the index is not seasonally adjusted.
## What it does not say
It measures prices households pay, not business costs, and house prices enter only through mortgage interest and replacement costs.
