Canada Real GDP per Person
Latest
60,446chained 2017 CAD per person (annual rate)
Methodology
## What this measures
Canada's real GDP (canada.gdp.quarterly, annual rate) divided by its population (the average of the population at the start and end of the quarter, or the start when the end is not yet published).
## Why it matters
It is the closest single measure of living standards. The Bank of Canada and many economists have pointed to falling GDP per person since 2022: the economy grew, but more slowly than the number of people sharing it.
## How to read it
Read the 12-month change (canada.gdp.per_capita.yoy). Compare with the U.S. (fred_real_gdp_per_capita) on growth rates, not levels: the two are in different currencies and base years.
## What it does not say
It is an average, not a measure of how income is shared, and it is not adjusted for differences in prices between countries.
