Methodology
## What this measures
Canada's gross domestic product at market prices, measured from spending (households, business investment, government and net exports) and adjusted for inflation. The official headline GDP figure, quarterly back to 1961.
## Why it matters
It is the measure recessions are dated against and the one central banks and markets quote. It goes back further than the monthly series.
## How to read it
Statistics Canada reports the quarterly change at an annual rate; a decline in two straight quarters is the rough rule for a recession. Compare with the same quarter a year earlier for a steadier read.
## What it does not say
It arrives two months after the quarter ends and is revised for years. It is not per person and says nothing about how income is shared.
