Canada Federal Government Gross Debt to GDP
Latest
60.89% of GDP
Methodology
## What this measures
What the federal government alone owes, including its pension liabilities, as a percent of GDP.
## Why it matters
Provinces carry a large share of Canadian public debt; this separates Ottawa's share from theirs.
## How to read it
Compare with the all-government figure to see the provincial share. The federal budget reports a different measure (the accumulated deficit).
## What it does not say
These are national-accounts figures (Statistics Canada), not the federal budget measures Finance Canada reports, and they include unfunded public-sector pension liabilities. Compare countries only with the same definition.
