Methodology
## What this measures
The number of new homes whose construction began in the month, across all of Canada, expressed as an annual pace (seasonally adjusted at annual rates).
## Why it matters
Starts lead construction jobs and building-material demand, and they show whether supply is responding to the housing shortage and to interest rates.
## How to read it
Monthly figures swing with multi-unit projects; read a 3- to 6-month average. Canada needs far more homes than it has been starting, so the level matters as much as the change.
## What it does not say
It counts starts, not completions, and does not say whether units are for sale or rent, or what they cost.
