Canada Consumer Insolvencies

11,757filings per month
Methodology
## What this measures
The number of Canadians who filed for bankruptcy or made a consumer proposal (a negotiated partial repayment) in the month.
## Why it matters
It is the hard end of household financial stress, and in Canada it lags interest-rate rises as mortgages renew at higher rates.
## How to read it
Compare the 12-month total (canada.insolvency.consumer_12m) with earlier years; 2023–25 filings rose to levels last seen around 2009–10. Proposals now outnumber bankruptcies by more than three to one.
## What it does not say
Counts are not seasonally adjusted (January and March run high); read 12-month totals or year-over-year changes. Filings are counted when they are made, not when debts went bad.
