Methodology
## What this measures
The value of goods Canadian factories shipped in a month, from the Monthly Survey of Manufacturing, seasonally adjusted.
## Why it matters
Factories are where trade policy and the U.S. economy reach Canada first; most of their output is exported to the United States.
## How to read it
Compare with a year earlier. It is in current dollars, so energy and metal prices move it; the survey publishes a constant-dollar version for volumes.
## What it does not say
It counts sales, not output or jobs, and price swings in petroleum and metals can dominate the total.
