Methodology
## What this measures
Statistics Canada's estimate of the number of people living in Canada on the first day of each quarter (January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1), including non-permanent residents.
## Why it matters
Population growth has been the main driver of Canadian GDP growth since 2022. Without it you cannot tell whether the economy is getting richer or just bigger.
## How to read it
Read the 12-month growth rate (canada.population.yoy). Growth above 2% a year, as in 2023–24, is the fastest since the 1950s and came almost entirely from immigration and temporary residents.
## What it does not say
Estimates are revised as new census and immigration data arrive. It does not split citizens from permanent and temporary residents (see canada.non_permanent_residents).
