Canada's share of US goods imports (12 months)

Latest

11.19pct

Methodology

## What this measures

This measures imports from Canada as a share of all US goods imports, summed over the trailing twelve months. It shows Canada's proportional weight in US trade flows.

## Background

Imports from Canada as a share of all US goods imports, trailing 12 months.

Σ12 US goods imports from the partner ÷ Σ12 US goods imports from the world × 100, Census FT-900 via FRED (IMPCA, IMP0004). Read alongside China's share: China falling while Vietnam and Mexico rise is partly trade rerouted through them, not only decoupling. Computed monthly by /api/cron/fred-composites.

## Why it matters

The share indicates how much an organization's US supply chains or customer base depend on Canadian cross-border flows. Shifts signal changes in sourcing patterns, tariff exposure, and the competitiveness of Canadian suppliers relative to other trading partners. A rising share may mean tightening capacity or pricing power for Canadian inputs; a falling share suggests diversification or substitution toward other origins.

## How to read it

A rise means Canada supplied a larger fraction of US imports; a fall means other countries grew faster or Canada lost ground. Compare this share with those of China, Mexico, and Vietnam to identify substitution and routing effects in supply chains.

## What it does not say

The share does not reveal the absolute volume or dollar value of imports from Canada, nor does it identify which goods or industries are driving the change.

## Source

Palanor computes this series monthly from US Census Bureau trade data (FT-900 tables) published by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis via the FRED API. The numerator is goods imports from Canada; the denominator is goods imports from all origins, both summed over twelve months.
