Amazon capex (trailing 12 months)

Latest

173.03USD billions

Methodology

## What this measures

Amazon's capital expenditure over the trailing four quarters. Capex is cash spent to acquire property and equipment.

## Background

Amazon's capital expenditure over the trailing four quarters, $ billions.

Cash purchases of property and equipment from the company's 10-Q and 10-K filings (SEC EDGAR XBRL, us-gaap PaymentsToAcquirePropertyPlantAndEquipment or PaymentsToAcquireProductiveAssets, whichever the company currently files). Cash-flow statements are year-to-date, so quarters are derived by differencing within each fiscal year; the fourth quarter is the annual figure minus nine months. Excludes assets acquired under finance leases, which Microsoft and Amazon add to their headline capex, so these read below company press releases. Synced weekly by /api/cron/edgar-capex-sync.

## Why it matters

Amazon's capex decisions shape cloud infrastructure capacity, fulfilment network scale, and technology investments that competitors must match or route around. Shifts in spending pace signal changes in the company's growth ambitions, margin priorities, or confidence in demand for AWS and retail services. Rivals, suppliers, and enterprises planning cloud adoption watch this to gauge the trajectory of platform capacity and competitive intensity.

## How to read it

A rise means Amazon is investing more heavily in physical assets; a fall indicates restraint or a shift in capital allocation. Compare the level and direction to other cloud providers and to Amazon's own revenue growth to assess whether the company is building ahead of demand or pulling back.

## What it does not say

This does not include assets acquired under finance leases, so it reads lower than the capex figures Amazon reports in earnings materials. It does not distinguish between spending on data centres, logistics facilities, or other categories.

## Source

Palanor reads XBRL filings from SEC EDGAR, a public-domain repository. The series uses the PaymentsToAcquirePropertyPlantAndEquipment or PaymentsToAcquireProductiveAssets element that Amazon files under US GAAP.
