Methodology
## What this measures
Meta's capital expenditure over the trailing four quarters, measured in billions of dollars. This captures cash purchases of property and equipment, primarily data center infrastructure and technical equipment.
## Background
Meta's capital expenditure over the trailing four quarters, $ billions.
Cash purchases of property and equipment from the company's 10-Q and 10-K filings (SEC EDGAR XBRL, us-gaap PaymentsToAcquirePropertyPlantAndEquipment or PaymentsToAcquireProductiveAssets, whichever the company currently files). Cash-flow statements are year-to-date, so quarters are derived by differencing within each fiscal year; the fourth quarter is the annual figure minus nine months. Excludes assets acquired under finance leases, which Microsoft and Amazon add to their headline capex, so these read below company press releases. Synced weekly by /api/cron/edgar-capex-sync.
## Why it matters
Capital expenditure signals Meta's investment in long-term capacity, especially compute infrastructure for AI model training and deployment. Rising capex suggests the company is building for future product cycles or competitive positioning, while falling capex may indicate efficiency gains, shifting priorities or caution about returns. The trajectory helps organizations gauge Meta's commitment to areas like generative AI and whether the platform's technical foundation is expanding or consolidating.
## How to read it
A rising series indicates Meta is spending more on physical assets, typically reflecting infrastructure buildout. A falling series suggests slower investment or completion of major projects. Compare the level and rate of change to other large technology companies to assess relative commitment to capacity expansion.
## What it does not say
This series does not include assets acquired under finance leases, so it understates total infrastructure investment compared to figures Meta may publish in earnings materials. It does not reveal what proportion goes to AI versus other uses, nor does it predict revenue or profitability from those investments.
