Microsoft capex (quarterly)

Methodology
## What this measures
Microsoft's capital expenditure per quarter, measured in billions of dollars. It represents cash purchases of property and equipment reported in the company's quarterly and annual filings.
## Background
Microsoft's capital expenditure per quarter, $ billions.
Cash purchases of property and equipment from the company's 10-Q and 10-K filings (SEC EDGAR XBRL, us-gaap PaymentsToAcquirePropertyPlantAndEquipment or PaymentsToAcquireProductiveAssets, whichever the company currently files). Cash-flow statements are year-to-date, so quarters are derived by differencing within each fiscal year; the fourth quarter is the annual figure minus nine months. Excludes assets acquired under finance leases, which Microsoft and Amazon add to their headline capex, so these read below company press releases. Synced weekly by /api/cron/edgar-capex-sync.
## Why it matters
Microsoft's capex reflects the scale of its investment in infrastructure, data centers and other fixed assets that underpin cloud services and AI operations. Large or rising capex signals the company is building capacity for future revenue, which can reshape pricing, competition and supplier demand across the technology sector.
## How to read it
A rise means Microsoft is spending more on property and equipment that quarter; a fall means it is spending less. Compare consecutive quarters to see whether the company is accelerating or moderating its infrastructure build, and compare to revenue or operating cash flow to assess the intensity of investment.
## What it does not say
This figure excludes assets acquired under finance leases, so it reads below the headline capex Microsoft reports in press releases. It does not reveal what categories of assets the company is buying or where it is deploying them.

Palanor reads quarterly and annual filings from SEC EDGAR in XBRL format, extracting cash purchases of property and equipment (us-gaap PaymentsToAcquirePropertyPlantAndEquipment or PaymentsToAcquireProductiveAssets). Because cash-flow statements are year-to-date, quarters are derived by differencing within each fiscal year.
