Chile Mining Employment (INE, Thousands)

Methodology
## What this measures
The number of people, in thousands, whose main job is in mining and quarrying (section B of CAENES, INE's version of the ISIC Rev. 4 classification), from INE's Encuesta Nacional de Empleo. Each value covers a rolling three-month period. It counts people by the industry of the business they work for, so it includes mining companies' own staff and those contractors classified to mining.
## Why it matters
Mining is Chile's largest export industry. The number of people it employs shows how investment cycles and copper prices are translating into jobs, which is what communities and governments look at when they judge what mining gives back.
## How to read it
Higher means more people working in mining. Chile's total has run between about 185,000 and 320,000 since 2013. Read it with the regional series to see where the jobs are.
## What it does not say
A survey estimate, not a payroll count. Many mining contractors are classified to construction or services and are not in this number. Three-month averages overlap. Not seasonally adjusted. INE revises the series each July.
