India CO₂ Emissions per Person (Global Carbon Budget)

Latest

2.2t CO₂ per person

Methodology

## What this measures

Annual carbon dioxide emitted from fossil fuels and industry within India, divided by its population, in tonnes of CO₂ per person. Land-use change is not included. Annual; each value is dated December 31 of its year.

## Why it matters

Per-person emissions separate how carbon-intensive a way of life and an economy are from how large the population is. It is the fairest single number for comparing countries of different sizes.

## How to read it

Lower is less. Compare countries at similar income levels and read the trend over several years.

## What it does not say

It uses territorial emissions, so countries that import emissions-intensive goods look cleaner than their consumption is. It covers CO₂ only, excludes land-use change, and depends on population estimates. The latest year is preliminary.
