## What this measures
This signal measures the size of China's economy relative to the United States when adjusted for purchasing-power parity. It expresses China's annual GDP as a percentage of US GDP after accounting for differences in price levels between the two countries.
## Background
China's GDP at purchasing-power parity as a percentage of the US figure, annual.
China's figure divided by the US figure for the same year, × 100, from World Bank series synced by /api/cron/worldbank-sync. 100 = parity. PPP adjusts for price levels; China passed the US on this measure in the mid-2010s.
## Why it matters
The metric tracks the long-run balance of economic scale between the world's two largest economies, which shapes trade negotiations, supply-chain decisions and the distribution of global demand. Organizations with operations or customers in either country use it to gauge shifting market opportunities and the durability of strategic bets tied to relative economic heft. A sustained rise signals China's growing weight in aggregate consumption and production.
## How to read it
A reading of 100 means the two economies are equal in PPP terms; above 100 means China's is larger. Rising values indicate China is gaining ground relative to the US, while falling values show it is losing ground or growing more slowly. Because the series updates annually, changes unfold gradually and reflect structural economic trends rather than short-term cycles.
## What it does not say
The signal does not capture differences in income per person, technological capability, military spending or the composition of output. PPP adjustment makes economies more comparable for welfare and consumption analysis but does not reflect exchange rates, trade flows or the international purchasing power of each country's currency.
